EIfEREIfERThe European Institute for Energy Research (EIfER) is an European Economic Interest Group (EEIG). It was created in Karlsruhe on the 28th of September 2001 by the French utility EDF and Universität Karlsruhe. It is aimed at developing or improving innovative clean energy technologies as well as tools and approaches for sustainable development of cities, territories and industries. To fulfill its mission, EIfER tackles energy and sustainability issues by treating 7 scales of activity sectors and characterizing their interactions. It re-enforces its technical (production means, best available technologies, ...) and environmental (emission reduction, environmental indicators, ) approaches by economical (cost-efficient strategies, macro-economy, green accounting, ) and social (employment impacts, ) studies. EIfER leads research activities on the following 3 main themes:
Since November 6th, EIfER is sponsoring partner of the Global Footprint Network. The objective of the present network is to clarify, through the participation and coordination of a working group of reputable scientists and practitioners, how the nuclear energy Footprint can be calculated. Ideally, such a process would eventually lead to a more standardized method for calculating the Ecological Footprint of the electricity produced by nuclear reactors.
